Snow on Mt. Tamalpais


Every Wednesday, starting February 12, 2014, from 5 to 9 pm.

Fee, per session:  Non-members $20;       MSA members $15

No instructor, just four hours to draw or paint from a live model and hone your skills!

All mediums welcome. Bring your art supplies (oil painters Gamsol only), including easel, and containers to transport your dirty rags, water, brushes, etc. home. No clean-up at Gallery.

Please be on time, or a little early to minimize interruption and for the best view. CASH ONLY.

Painting the Landscape

Instructor: Bernard Healey
A four session acrylic painting course.

Mr. Healey studied at the Art Institute in San Francisco and is a graduate of the Academy of Advertising Art. Bernard is currently on the faculty of the College of Marin Emeritus Community Education and an instructor at the Mill Valley Community Center Art Department.

All levels welcome. Bring your art supplies, including a portable easel.

Plein Air Workshop

Instructor: Carol Smith Myer

During this three day workshop, held consecutive Thursdays on the grounds of the Marin Art and Garden Center, Carol will demonstrate the steps she uses creating a colorist landscape.

Artists will explore seeing and understanding when and how to use color according to the time of day, atmosphere and surrounding nature.

Included will be one on one instruction, making this suitable for all levels of artists.

Participants will meet at the Marin Society of Artists Gallery at 2:00 pm.

Oil Painting - The Basics

Instructor: Award winning artist Arlene Whiting

Arlene establishes color and value patterns first and the subject matter is woven into that design. "I use the natural gesture of the subject and expand the composition using corresponding shapes, light and dark values and appropriate color. I love to draw, but resist the temptation to draw subject matter until I have the abstract elements in place."

The series will cover: The Basics, Value/Design, Color and Putting it Together.

Jan Kunz

Building a Portrait, a Jan Kunz Workshop

Instructor: Jan Kunz, watercolorist and author

A nontraditional, but effective, approach to portraiture, a sequence of lessons that will help artists capture the personality and uniqueness of their subjects. Study materials will be provided, such as handouts on facial structure. Jan will demonstrate in watercolor, but other painting media are acceptable.

Jan Kunz has taught painting workshops nationwide and her instruction books have been published internationally.

Thursdays, July 10, 17, 24 and 31. .

Students are encouraged to take the full series

Marin Open Studios

2014 Marin Open Studios at Marin Society of Artists

Marin Open Studios is an annual, free, self-guided art tour in Marin County that takes place the first two weekends in May.

Meet the artists behind the work. The artwork is for sale, but there is much more in the offering: ideas, inspiration, the conversation of creativity, and a glimpse into lives devoted to art.

May 3 and 4, and May 10 and 11, from 11am to 6pm.

The MSA Gallery is fully reserved. During our second year of partnering with MOS, we are looking forward to a wonderful Open Studios 2014 at the MSA Gallery. Thank you MSA Members for making this happen.
